So I have taken up bush walking, more specifically, hauling myself up to the summit of Mount Lofty and then running down again. I'd like to say I do it for the pleasure, but it's more to do with competition... with people I don't know, with people I do know but they don't know that we are in a dual and with myself. That, and I may be addicted. I once asked a frequenter for a ball-park time frame - at that point, purely for logistical reasons; however it became the benchmark (which, incidentally I beat today). There is a blackboard located at the top for people to record their times, which, upon reading sends me in a pendulum swing of smug contentment to a breathless desire to quit on the spot (honestly, who can get up there in less than 30 minutes?).
Presently, I have Tuesday "off"... from everything. Mr E is at school and Miss N is at childcare. This is so that I am available to be called into work. But I haven't been called yet. It's been 4 weeks and Mount Lofty has featured in 3 of them. The first time, I dragged my labrador-esque husband with me on a 36degreecelsius day. He nearly divorced me I'm sure. I couldn't convince him to come the next week, so we compromised with Belair National Park. Thankfully, he has exited this newfound hobby which means I can get back to my strange 'love-hate' relationship with the small pimple on the face of the earth that us Adelaidians like to call a 'mount'.
My stats thus far:
1/2/11 - 65-ish mins up, 50 mins down (Labrador in tow)
15/2/11 - 51 mins up (lengthy stop for phonecall with the Labrador), 35 mins down
22/2/11 - 46 mins up, 28 mins down... yeah...
All that aside, it really is a beautiful walk. I am yet to see any promised wildlife (oh, except for the "wriggly stick"). I am surprised by the number of people who do this - at least as regularly as me as I am already starting to recognise people. Fighting for a car park is becomming the biggest challenge of the whole affair.
Now I am in the predicament of not wanting any schools to call me away from this new hobby... though the bank balance has other things to say about that!
PS That last 800m is MURDER!
